February is LGBT+ History Month, a time when we reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the LGBT+ community throughout history. At Kingston University, we believe in embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity. That’s why we have organized with the LGBT+ Student Society a series of engaging events and activities to celebrate this important month. Whether you identify as LGBT+ or as an ally, we invite you to join us and celebrate the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community.

Abdullah your Education Officer: All people should be treated equally regardless of who they are or who they Love. We are all born with our unique complexities, orientation, and challenges. But if we could just respect and celebrate all the wonderful complexities of people, the world would be such a better place. Everyone deserves a safe, equal and supportive environment regardless of their orientation or identity in which everyone achieves their true potential. Keep calm and love who you are!

UKS LGBT+ Society: This LGBT+ History month we hope people learn something about LGBT+ History and become aware of our society, and find our safe space to meet other LGBT+ Students and people.

A brief history

The US has been hosting the event since the 1990s, but the inaugural UK LGBT+ History Month took place in February 2005. It was purposely scheduled to coincide with the second anniversary of the repeal of Section 28, a law that banned the promotion of homosexuality by local authorities. This month-long celebration aims to enlighten individuals about the queer community, which has faced historical erasure and discrimination. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity to commemorate the often-neglected aspects of our shared history.

What’s happening this year?

This year’s theme is “Medicine - #UnderTheScope”.

Through this theme, we seek to highlight the astounding work that LGBT+ individuals do across the NHS and other healthcare settings. It’s a chance to shine a light on both the progress made and the challenges that remain in the LGBT+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare. Unfortunately, even today, we see lingering health inequalities that disproportionately affect LGBT+ people.

How can I be an ally?

There are many ways you can show your allyship during this month.

Your UKS has organised in collaboration with the LGBT+ Student Society a range of activities to celebrate this month, from banner making to pub quizzes.

Join us in unleashing your creativity and making colourful banners that will be displayed across the campus, spreading the powerful message of love, acceptance, and equality! Start your day with a warm cup of coffee and engaging conversations, as we invite you to join us and meet members of the Kingston LGBTQ+ Forum. This is a great opportunity to build connections within our vibrant community and foster meaningful relationships. Let's come together for an evening of entertainment and inspiration as we watch the critically acclaimed film, Rocketman.

To add, get ready for an event organized by your own university, featuring speaker Jude Guatamacchi, a passionate advocate for LGBT+ representation, along with Drag Icon Mahatma Khandi. Listen and learn from their experiences, as they share their wisdom and insights. Embark on a cultural adventure with the Book Club Society as we visit Gay's Word, a renowned LGBTQ+ library and archive. Immerse yourself in this treasure trove of knowledge and explore the rich history of the community.

If you're up for some fun-filled board game night, join us at Kingston Hill. This evening promises laughter, competition, and camaraderie as we bond over classic and modern board games. It's the perfect opportunity to relax, socialize, and make lasting connections. Wind down and socialize with fellow LGBTQ+ individuals, allies, and members of the Kingston LGBTQ+ Forum. This is your chance to connect, make friends, and broaden your perspectives in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Finally, at our Not My Beautiful House support local LGBTQ+ artists at our Makers Market. Explore a diverse array of unique and handmade crafts, jewellery, and artworks while celebrating the incredible talent within our community. Moreoevr, put your knowledge to the test with a lively evening of trivia and friendly competition. Gather your team, grab a drink, and join us for an LGBTQ+ themed pub quiz that guarantees an exciting and entertaining night.

Join us in these events and be part of a community that celebrates diversity, promotes inclusivity, and advocates for equal rights. Together, let's create a stronger, more supportive environment for all.
