Easter

This year, Good Friday falls on the 29th of March and Easter falls on Sunday, 31st of March, both key dates in Christianity.

Sarmmed, your Welfare Officer says: “I hope Easter brings students a renewed sense of hope and joy as they embrace new beginnings, growth, and compassion, fostering a community of love, understanding, and support.”

Good Friday occurs on the Friday before Easter Sunday, which this year falls on the 29th of March. It observes the remembrance of Jesus Christ's crucifixion and is typically seen as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting. Easter follows it, the most important occasion of the Christian church commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. The Resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, making Easter a pivotal date on the calendar. Before Easter, many Christians observe Lent, fasting and penitence lasting 40 days (excluding Sundays) starting on Ash Wednesday.

In Western Christianity, Easter occurs between 22 March and 25 April, following the Gregorian calendar. It typically falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Meanwhile, Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday between 4 April and 8 May, following the Julian calendar. Easter Sunday marks the beginning of Eastertide in some Protestant denominations, ending with Pentecost Sunday 50 days later. In Eastern Orthodox branches, Easter Sunday kicks off the Pascha season, concluding 40 days later with the Feast of the Ascension.

Easter celebrations often begin on Holy Saturday with the Easter Vigil service. In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the Great Lent period starts on Clean Monday, 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter. This season culminates with Palm Week, leading up to Palm Sunday and Holy Week, which ends with Easter.

UKS will be closed for both Good Friday (29th March) and Easter Monday (1st April), but we’ll be back on the 2nd April for anything you need.
