Enviromenstrual Campaign

let's talk periods

in society there is still a massive taboo around periods, this taboo has had a big impact on the products we use and how we dispose of them. certain products can affect our health, end up in landfill, on our beaches, or pollute our oceans for decades! we are trying to fight this taboo and encourage the use of organic or resuable products. here are some facts:

  • Menstural pads can contain up to 90% plastic
  • 2bn menstrual items are flushed down britains toilets each year, causing massive sewage issues
  • Disposal of signle use menstrual products generates 200,000 tonnes of waste per year in the UK
  • 58% of people have felt embarrassed simply because they were on their period
  • Millions of women across the UK have to choose between food and sanitary products

unfortuantely, the cheapest are often those with the most potential to damage our health and planet which means that people with the least power have the greatest exposure to potentially harmful products. we believe everyone deserves equal access to healthy, eco-friendly period products. here in the union, we provide free sanitary products for students to use.

here at UKS we are trying to change the taboo and raise awareness about different period products options (including reusables) by providing you with the opportunity to test some products for free!

if reusables sounds a bit daunting try using organic period products. This means your supporting the development of organic cotton production, where cotton farmers, the majority of whom are women in cotton producing countries, can safely grow food crops between the cotton and reduce their families’ exposure to pesticides.

It's important to recognise that not all women have periods and not all people who have periods are women and everyone has a different experience and we'd love to encourage everyone to
