General Information and Guidelines

Every year we hold the Society Awards Ceremony to recognise and celebrate the hard work and achievements of Union of Kingston Student Societies. 

Information about the award categories can be found below. You can start planning which ones you want to work towards winning!

1.Society of the Year

The Society of the Year Award aims to reward the society that has offered the best service to its members, good organisation of activities, a wide variety and number of events, improvements on previous years, involvement within the Union and overall organisation and structure.

2. Best New Society

The Best New Society Award aims to reward the society that has formed that academic year and has actively recruited members, formed the best overall structure and provided the best service to its members. This new society should provide solid foundations to enable continuation from year to year.

3. Most Improved Society 

The Most Improved Society Award aims to reward the society that has shown significant positive change in the year compared to the previous. It will be awarded to the society that has shown an increased number of members and events, has made efforts to collaborate with other societies and has partaken in activities beyond the immediate society aims and objectives.

4. Society Event of the Year

The Society Event of the Year Award aims to reward the society that has held an outstanding event which had the best attendance, publicity, marketing and special guests.

5.Society Achievement Award

The Society Achievement Award aims to reward the society that has participated in an outstanding activity. This could be a competition placing, fundraiser, successful campaign or volunteering project.

6. Most Active Society

The Most Active Society Award aims to reward the society that has held the most events, meetings and campaigns and has provided the best service to its members.

7.Outstanding Contribution to Societies

This is awarded to a member of a society who has provided an outstanding contribution to the running, operation and activity of one or more societies for at least one year. This award is to acknowledge consistent service beyond that which is normally expected of a society member or committee member. Any society officers successful in this category will automatically be nominated for the Officer of the Year Award.

8. President of the Year

Awarded to the president who has shown an exceptional commitment to their society, passion to drive the society forward to make it bigger and better and excellent organisation in developing ideas/events . This person should have a thorough understanding of the committees needs and have consistently organised activities and meetings for society members that are engaging and rewarding. This person will have kept society members well informed and taken their suggestions onboard.

9. Treasurer of the Year

This is awarded to the treasurer of a society who has shown excellent organisation, accurate control of society accounts and the use of a budget.  This award is to acknowledge consistent hard work in all applications for funding, society expenditures and control of society income.  The nominee will have shown dedication in their role and remained consistent throughout the year in developing the society alongside the committee.

10. Secretary of the Year

This is awarded to the secretary of a society who has shown excellent organisation, accurate minute taking and pre written agendas for meetings.  This award is to acknowledge consistent hard work, active contribution in events/meetings and assisting the president.  The nominee will have shown dedication in their role and remained consistent throughout the year in developing the society alongside the committee.

11. Media Officer of the Year 

This is awarded to the media officer of a society who has shown excellent marketing, communication with members and advertising for society events. This award is to acknowledge consistent hard work, inventive ways of contacting and gaining new members and sending fortnightly email updates to members. The nominee will have shown dedication in their role and remained consistent throughout the year in developing the society and it's communication alongside the committee. 

12. Global Festival Event of the Year 

The Society Global Festival Event of the Year Award aims to reward the society that held an outstanding event during Global festival which showed excellent organisation, commitment and delivery. It must have been engaging for attendees/participants and shown the spirit of Global week through its display of global issues, culture and internationalism. 

13.  Recognition Award 

This is a new award that looks to recognise a society, committee member or member that has done something incredible. This could be a society wide achievement or a personal achievement. It could also be awarded to highlight a truly outstanding perfromance or contribution by one individual to a society. Or it could be awarded to a whole committee or team to recognise their amazing team work and contribution to developing their society or an event. This award will be awarded to showcase the best of the best and something/someone that sits above the rest! 

 The Awards Committee is made up of the following members–

• Societies Activities Manager 
• Societies Coordinator
• x1 Full time Student Officer
