this month, we’re bringing you a programme filled with celebration, discussion, support and unity, celebrating the richness of black culture and history. There’s lots to do throughout the month - get inspired by our talk with Toyah Washington, express your creativity in our workshop with Esme Allman and more. our offering of events is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting and empowering Black students alongside educating non-Black students too.

we launched Union Speaks back in March 2020 with a series on sex work for Womens History Month. we’re bringing it back this month, focussing on highlighting black voices throughout KU and beyond on chosen topics. tune into our first episode with Keziah Cader discussing Black mental health and how art and the barbershop can be used to facilitate conversations around the topic as well as to improve one's mental state.”

 Toya Talks: Navigating the world of work as a black women

   we’re excited to invite Toya Washington to our line-up of events to deliver a highly inspirational talk. with 70.9k podcast downloads on Spotify, Toya continues to captivate listeners on a weekly basis with podcast topics such as “career -v- family, can you have both?”, “whistle blower” and financial education”. 

“Toya Talks speaks to black women; I chose black women first because we are under-represented and often not picked first or at all. Then I speak to all women. Toya Talks is a platform created to teach, educate and demonstrate how to navigate the oppressive and often aggressive construct of the workplace.”
